U.C. Unidades de Crédito = Credits = Says how mych weight every subject has. To calculate the final mark of the course you do this:  Calculate the sum of (mark x U.C.) of all subjects. (Sum / Total U.C.) = final mark.

Mine erfaringer og karakterer

Read about my first year (2000-2001) in Management Informatics; my experiences, my marks and personal comments.

General

This year is very hard as far as work is concerned and demands a lot of self-discipline to always keep track of what is being taught in the different subjects. To be able to get good marks it isn’t enough only being good in the natural sciences. It is necessary to have capacities in the social sciences as well, which creates problems for quite a lot of students. Traditionally a student that is good in the natural sciences doesn’t show very good skills in discussion, interpretation, communication and critical vision. This is gravely penalized in this course because it trains professionals that are supposed to communicate and interact with other people and take care of big amounts of information, explaining why the mentioned capacities are very important. As I am Norwegian with only one year living in Portugal before the start of the semester, and no prior contact with Portuguese before that, the language presented some difficulties in the beginning. These problems disappeared little by little as I dominated each day better the language. I feel I am at the right place, I like the course a lot and I feel motivated to continue.

Structured Programming

Teachers:
   Filipe de Sá-Soares (Lectures)
   Rui João José (Lab)
This subject didn’t present difficulties for me, except the huge amount of work. Already having some experience in programming helped a lot. The amount of work consumed in this subject may for some seem exaggerated, but you gain a lot of experience and good working habits.

Analysis and Statistics

Teacher:
   Helena Lucas
This subject also was relatively easy for me. It is necessary to work a lot (solve a lot of exercises) to get good marks and it is also a good idea to have bases in mathematics. One should take this subject very seriously because it is worth many credits and forms an important basis for later subjects.

Economy and Administration

Teachers:
   Cristiana Cerqueira (1. Sem)
   Isabel Silva (2. Sem)
This subject is, without much logic, annual. The first semester treated Financial Calculus and the second Marketing. It seems better to make it two subjects, but it seems that the curriculum changes over the years. The first semester was very difficult for the class in general, but I found it very easy. The second semester was very interesting and I learnt a lot about marketing. Unfortunately I found it very hard to interpret the questions on the test, which was the multiple choice type, with a quite confusing language.

Introduction to the Sciences of Administration and Management

Teacher:
   Emília Fernandes
This subject shouldn’t be very easy for me, being foreign. It is a subject that requires written answers / essays in Portuguese. At the first semester test I only got 10 (out of 20) because of my lacking knowledge of Portuguese and, in my opinion, little comprehension from the teacher’s side. At the second semester test I made up for the weak performance and my final mark was 15, the highest possible improvement considering the 10 from the first semester. This improvement came partly because I dominated Portuguese better, which alone was a big victory for me. I feel that my mark at this subject is also a reflection of extra curricular reading and personal qualities in communication and argumentation.

Introduction to Informatics

Teacher:
   F. Almeida
This is maybe the easiest subject of the year, in spite of requiring lots of work in solving papers given by the teacher during the year. I already had some bases in informatics and solved the papers easily, which wasn’t the case with many of my colleagues. As a critic I would say that the solutions of the papers should count for the mark and not only for admission to the exam.

If a student receives fourteen – 14 – or more as the average mark during a school-year, the student wins a prize and a space in a honour list. If a student receives fourteen – 14 – or more as the final mark of the course, the student may apply to take a Master Degree and / or apply for a job as a teacher at a Portuguese university.
