Hiking to Åsfjellet
Created: 2011-08-28 14:44
August 27, 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Åsfjellet (336 m) in Tromsø. Åsfjellet can hardly be classified as a mountain, but it's nonetheless a nice walk. The terrain is easy going all the way, but a bit slippery up some steep slopes. We spent 43 minutes to the cairn, but then we sped things up a bit when we were closing to the top.

The super holidays of 2011 ended with almost 2 weeks in Portugal. First we flew from Rome to Oporto and Guimarães and stayed there for a week. Then we took a train to Albufeira by the Algarve coast for 5 days with sunny beaches. A perfect finale for great holidays! :)

The 2011 summer holidays continued with a week in Italy. From Geneva to Venice by train, then a couple of days in the city of canals before we headed for the eternal city Rome, also by train. Italy was an exercise in lining up and avoiding all things "vietato". Apart from that, there was a lot to see and eat ;)

Hiking to Movikhammaren
Created: 2011-07-07 20:45
July 7th 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Movikhammaren (357 m). This isn't a very tall peak, nor is it really a peak, but the trip there is nevertheless pleasant and includes forest trails and mountainous landscape. It's a great trip when you don't feel like walking a lot, but still wants to get the mountain feeling. We spent 53 minutes the 3 kilometers to the top - including a small accident.

Hiking to Fjellheisen, Fløya and Bønntuva

July 3rd 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Fjellheisen (421 m), Fløya (671 m) and Bønntuva (776 m) in Tromsø. Walking to Fløya was surprisingly short, so we accidentally ended up at Bønntuva! We spent a little more than 1 hour on the 4,5 kilometers to the last peak.

Hiking to Rødryggen
Created: 2011-07-01 21:14
July 1st 2011, I went hiking to Rødryggen (776m) in Tromsdalen, Tromsø. This is not a very exciting "peak"; in the future I'd rather go there on the way to Tromsdalstinden or as part of some other route. I spent 1h 21min the 9,25kms, jogging from the graveyard close to TUIL Arena.

Hiking to Rødtinden og Rødtindfjellet
Created: 2011-06-26 17:35
June 26th. 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Rødtinden (470m) and then to Rødtindfjellet (596m) on Kvaløya in Tromsø. Rødtinden is a very popular peak and we met lots of people in spite of the weather being a bit grey. It's a relatively easy peak, but it's a bit wet at times, so wear good shoes. Up to Rødtinden, we spent around 40 minutes, and 50 minutes all the way to Rødtindfjellet.

Hiking to Ørnfløya
Created: 2011-06-26 17:34
June 25th. 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Ørnfløya (168m) after having been to Rødfjellet. Ørnfløya isn't really a mountain, but the view from up there is great anyway! If you're around, you really should walk up there. We spent around 10 minutes to get up to that fabulous view!

June 25th. 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Rødfjellet (542 m) by Sørfjorden/Kattfjorden on Kvaløya in Tromsø. Clouds, mist and a lot of walking were the keywords of the day. You walk a lot to get to this peak; 7.5km one way - on which we spent 1h 35min.

Trip to Nordfjellet
Created: 2011-06-23 21:29
June 23. 2011, I went hiking to Nordfjellet (626m) in Kroken, Tromsø. It was partly cloudy with glimpses of sun this great day to go hiking. I started at Tromsø Alpinsenter and followed the ski slope and the power cables to the top, and got there jogging in 34 minutes. I've got to do something while I can't do my regular workout along paved roads because of a hurting knee ;)

June 20th 2011, Kari and I went hiking to Tverrfjellet at Kvaløya in Tromsø, Norway. This mouintain was well known for both of us, and it's a nice mountain to climb after work one day one feels like getting out. Tverrfjellet is 675 meters tall - it took us 60 minutes to get to the top.

Skiing on Finnlandsfjellet
Created: 2011-01-31 10:44
January 29, Kari and I went skiing in the mountains. The weather was great and it seemed like the ideal day for skiing. For my part, however, it was an almost traumatizing experience with quite some ice and packed snow which didn't fit a novice in downhill skiing at all. It was the first time ever I tried downhill skiing, and the result wasn't pretty! I really need to work on my skills, while Kari does telemark turns with the greatest of ease :)

Hiking to Durmålstinden
Created: 2010-08-29 15:38
August 29th 2010, a friend of mine and I went hiking to Durmålstinden (921m). It's not the world's most exciting peak to climb, but the view from the top is as always great! We spent a little less than 2 hours up, and almsot 1,5 hours down again; following a trail that's well enough marked and that shouldn't scare anybody.

Hiking to Grønnlibruna
Created: 2010-08-28 23:55
August 28th 2010 I went hiking to Grønnlibruna (401m) to enjoy the view towards Balsfjorden and my new flat on Fagereng at the island of Tromsø. The trip to the top is very easy, and can even be done by bicycle if you have a decent off-roader and have some bicycle skills. I spent 40min on the way up, but got bit by a dog near the top and had to stop to document it and get info from the owners. Back down again I spent 26min.

Hiking to Vasstinden
Created: 2010-08-26 17:22
August 26. 2010 I went hiking to Vasstinden (890m). Rarely I experience such a rough start when climbing a peak; it's almost straight up the first 450 height meters. Actually, it's so steep that people who are afraid of heights should consider carefully if they want to climb this peak! Other than that, the route is very good, well marked and the terrain excellent - and the view is simply awesome! I also recommend continuing to the next cairn over the mountain ridge after arriving to the main cairn; there the view is even better! I spent 1h 15min up, and 55min down again.

Hiking to Tverrfjellet

August 24, 2010, some fit souls from the University of Tromsø went hiking. The trip went to Tverrfjellet (675m) on the island of Kvaløya. This is a relatively easy peak to climb and really about anyone can go here. It's great hiking terrain and the trip has varied and impressive views.

Hiking to Store Russetinden
Created: 2010-08-01 18:24
August 1st 2010, a group of 30 and I went hiking to Store Russetinden (1405 m) by Nordkjosbotn. This was a peak I had waited a long time to climb; it is considered a landmark and is the tallest peak visible from Nordkjosbotn. We spent 3h 23min to the top, and 2h 22min down again; the pace was very calm!

Hiking to Lavangstinden
Created: 2010-07-31 19:23
July 31st 2010 I went hiking to Lavangstinden (764 m) in cloudy weather with light rain; a great weather for hiking that brings out the smell of the forest and the feeling of being in the nature. The trail is very well marked, kudos to the people maintaining it! In the beginning, there is a lot of tall grass, bushes and narrow trails. Midway and to the top there is great hiking terrain. Today I walked calmly with brand new shoes and feeling the pretty tough trip to a taller peak yesterday in my legs; I got myself to the top in 1h 32min, and down again in 1h 8min - and I didn't run a single meter.

Hiking to Tromsdalstinden
Created: 2010-07-30 18:13
July 30th 2010 i went hiking to Tromsdalstinden (1238 m), or just "Tinden" as the locals call it. To me, this was almost pure exercise; I ran big parts of the way up and most of the way down. The trail is very well marked, but there are some rocky areas that can be tricky. However, if people take it easy I guess almost anybody can get to the top of this mountain. I spent 1h 17min to the top, and 59min down again. My starting point was a parking lot down in Tromsdalen. Note that the photos aren't published in chronological order, as I only shot photos on my way down.

Hiking to Kvannfjellet
Created: 2010-07-25 18:18
July 25, 2010, i hiked to Kvannfjellet (1011 m) in Malangen. The start of the trip was some of the most national romantic I've ever experienced, but the enormous amount of flies changed that feeling after a while. There was a well marked trail until the forest line, after that you are on your own. That lead me into some rocky areas that were a bit too steep for my liking on the way up, but I avoided that on the way down. If you know your way around this mountain, the trip is good for anybody. Actually, I found this mountain a bit boring, without much spectacular terrain around, but it was a nice trip anyway. I spent 1h 10min on my way up, and 40min on my way down.

Hiking to Hattavarre
Created: 2010-07-24 22:23
Jule 24th, 2010, I went hiking to Hattavarre mountain (1408m). The trip wasn't very dramatic, but the trail wasn't very well marked so I got a bit lost at times, especially because I really didn't know which mountain I was going to before I was there. There are some bone-breaking areas with lots of boulders and loose stones, some rivers that must be passed and some marshes; not a family trip maybe! On top the view is great though :) I spent 2h 13m to get to the top, and 1h 20m to get down again.

Hiking to Fugltinden
Created: 2010-07-21 19:22
July 21, 2010, I hiked to Fugltinden (1033m). The weather was unstable and on the peak alone I had rain, snow, fog, sun and blue sky! It was a great trip and a new peak for me. I started from Tennes and after some trouble finding where the route actually started, it was very well marked and easy to follow. I spent 1h 27min to reach the top, and 40min to get down again. There are no really steep parts and the trail is suitable for almost anybody. Even so, the view from the top is breathtaking!

Midnight Sun Marathon 2010

Here are some photos from my participation in MSM 2010, my first marathon race ever. The race started the 19th of June at 8:30PM. It was 4-6°C and rain that day! Not exactly perfect conditions, but either way a fabulous experience! I crossed the finish line at 03:41:45 as number 89 of 313 men, or 27 of 71 in my class, "Men 30-39 years", and I could hardly have been happier with the result! I can add that my average speed was approximately 11.5km/h (~8.4 minutes/mile) and the average number of heartbeats per minute was 159 during the 26.2 miles.

Hattavarreracet - downhill race in Tamokdalen
Created: 2010-04-24 17:54
The 24th of April I participated in an extreme/downhill race in Hattavarret mountain. It is a spectacular race which takes you through thrilling drops, fabulous plains and challenging forest trails in a marked but insecure course. It's been less than 3 months since I started with snowboard, so this was a surrealistic but FANTASTIC experience.

New York - Wall St, WTC, Statue of Liberty and more

The days in New York are over. I had a few surprises on the trip with Norwegian references where I least expected them and a "culinary experience" I wouldn't have wanted to miss.
